Booming American Economy Affecting the Economies of other Countries
Current Event Article Summary
1. Write a short summary – 200 to 250 words of text (not more, not less). Include the word count. The word count does not include the title, your name, etc. Typed, double-spaced. Read – Revise – Repeat (3R); Spell check, grammar check, proof read.
2. The reason for the word limit is to make you think about conveying the most pertinent information in the most efficient way. Don’t just ramble until you hit 200 words then put a period.
3. This is a synopsis not an opinion piece so do not editorialize (i.e., do not give your opinion).
4. Do not use any outside sources [except to verify facts, spelling of names, etc.]
5. NO quotations! If all students realized that you only quote exceptional use of language [“Ask not what your country…], we wouldn’t have a problem. Unfortunately, nearly every student just quotes bland text such as – Author Jackie Smith said that, “obesity in Mexico is being caused by Mexicans eating too much food,” which ain’t Oscar Wilde! The purpose seems to be to just fill space [not the purpose of the assignment] without thinking [the purpose of the assignment].
6. Do not write an introduction saying what you’re going to say, and a conclusion saying what you said. These are tedious and a waste of words. I’ll figure out what you are going to say, when I read what you say, and what you said, when I’ve finished reading it.
