The main advantage of having a diverse team is that it makes it easy to have a rich pool of perspectives offered by the members. This is because each of the members offers a unique idea or solution to a certain problem. In the end, there is the occurrence of not one but numerous options out of the ideas, which can sometimes be a source of creativity and innovation for the team. The other advantage is that it increases the talent pool within the group, as different group members would have their own unique special abilities which can contribute towards the productivity of the team(Gaille,2015).
There are advantages too. First, there might be a perpetual state of friction and conflict among the team members. This is because what one team member might perceive to be right, might be the opposite of what the other member or members perceive the same thing to be. Such conflicts of interests result in a lot of friction, which in the long run can risk ruining the overall productivity of the team. It might also result in numerous points of authority, since the control of the team would be dependent on each one’s interpretation.
To ensure increased creativity and innovation within a team, as a leader, I would focus much on drilling them to have a collaborative culture (Gratton & Erickson, 2007).
