Change Initiative: Implementation, Evaluation, and Sustainability
When the business strategies of an organization are not working, or there have been some unexpected complications, it is essential to initiate change. The initiation of a change in an organization is significant as it can lead to the success of the organization. As the head of the department in the human resource department, I have realized an issue that needs to be addressed. There is a need to create a social media platform page for the department to create a positive image of the department to other employees because of a negative attitude they may have formed against the department. Previously employees have claimed that the department collaborates with the stakeholders to award them fewer salaries. There is a need to establish a team that will deal with the social media pages and at the same time gain back the trust of the other employees. The negative attitude has resulted in the negative image of the department, and without employee collaboration, the company will be headed for failure.
At times the company does not make enough profit and when this happens employee salaries have to be delayed and at times delivered in installments. The failure of the company to make sufficient money is not the fault of the department. When this happens, the other staff members blame the department for the delay of their salaries. What is contributing to this is the inability of the organization to generate enough revenue. This situation is affecting employees in the department since they are receiving hostility from the other employees especially when payday is around the corner. The other employees working in the organization are also contributing to this situation by constantly complaining to the head of the department when receiving their salaries.
Here the stakeholders/shareholders have nothing to do with the decision however their approval is needed so they must be consulted. Since as the head of the department I need I will be faced with the challenge of convincing them that the team will be looking out for their best interests. The team will not be asking for additional workers it will just utilize the amount of workforce the department has. This is important because the company cannot already afford to pay its current workforce. The initiation of the social media pages will be beneficial to the organization since they are not limited to other employees only. They also reach other people who may be interested in the affairs of the company. Since the pages are only interested in passing out a positive message about the department, the positive messages might win back the confidence of potential customers. Should this happen then the firm would increase its sales hence increased profits thus paying the employees fully on time.
Being the department automatically makes me the change leader hence I have to be responsible for the group and ensure its success. As the leader, it is my role to make sure that only positive messages about the department and the organization are posted on the social media pages. I am also responsible for providing the necessary tools and resources required by the team to come up with effective results. The leadership style to be exerted in this situation is the participatory leadership style whereby decisions are made with the participation of the people they affect, but the head of the department has the ultimate final decision. In this style of leadership, the final decisions lay on the hands of the individual in the top-most position (Kekäle & Pirttilä, 2016). More importantly the person the top is tasked with providing the team with the necessary equipment they require so as to achieve an effective outcome.
Some of the change agents I need for the process of initiating change to begin would be a team of individuals who have a background in public relations and are familiar with the electronic equipment and their repairs. Another requirement would be the provision of the internet in the department. For the social media pages to be effective, there is the need of the web to operate them. The internet is also important for research on things that the team is not familiar with. The team will be tasked with the duty of developing good looking advertisements to run on the pages. The advertisement should be educative bout the organization and should mostly dwell on the affairs of the department. The manager, in this case, me should constantly remind the team that the primary goal of the pages in to create a positive image of the department on the other employees and gain back their trust.
Developed back in the 1940’s the change theory is still being used to date. Kurt Lewin the individual responsible for its invention states that for change to occur it must be needed in the organization (Burnes, 2014). The change model comprises of three stages; unfreeze-change-refreeze. It is in the unfreeze stage where one has to persuade the firm that the change is needed. The change part is whereby the people begin looking at any uncertainty they may hold and start looking...
