The skills approach to leadership focuses on the leader-centered perspective, which emphasizes the skills and competencies that leaders can learn and develop to nurture traits for effective leadership (Northouse, 2021). According to Katz, leaders require three primary skills for competent leadership: technical, human, and conceptual. A strong leader needs these three skills based on their degree of significance at different levels of management structure (Zulaikha & Yi, 2022). For instance, conceptual skills are essential for senior executives at the upper level of the hierarchy. In contrast, technical skills are of greater significance at a lower level of the management structure.
The skills approach to leadership has enormous appeal to organizations, particularly in the modern context where organizations need to evolve with the changing business dynamics. Firstly, the approach supports the idea that leadership traits can be learned and developed, so organizations find it an attractive prospect to nurture leadership qualities and traits within individuals who may have the capacity to be future leaders (Northouse, 2021).
