Typically, quality is integral to product research, design and development phases. By building quality into features and components of a given product, a producer makes quality definitive of such product. In so doing, quality is not inspected into a product. Instead, quality is integral to all production phases and processes. This conception of product quality has far-reaching implications for product research, design and development processes.
From a research perspective, a planned product is conceptualized according to a user-centric approach. That is, in product pre-design phase maximized utility is built into a planned product by having ultimate user in mind. This approach to product conceptualization makes quality innate in, as opposed to external to, products during research phase. The possible questions asked during research phase could include, for example:
* What gaps current offerings have in delivering optimum quality for end users?
* What market, design and brand values are involved in a new planned product?
* Is a breakthrough innovation necessary to differentiate a proposed product from current offerings?
* Is external expertise required to fill in internal R&D knowledge and experience?
* In what ways features and capabilities built in a product could be scaled or rolled back in response to external market dynamics and/or internal organizational factors?
