Before interacting with the materials of this class, I was aware of the fundamental role that human resource management plays in streamlining workplace operations and creating a supportive environment for employees to achieve their potential. As a result, I was eager to learn new concepts and expand my knowledge in this area to equip me with the requisite skills for excelling as a future HR manager. My attentiveness and willingness to interact with resources, including additional research, cemented my perspective that HR is critical for any organization that focuses on collective growth for all stakeholders, including its employees. Thus, the class has increased my passion and determination to build a successful HR career.
Although the learnings incorporated different concepts, the discussions about an employer’s role in forming unions among its employees were one of the most insightful aspects. Despite being conversant with the specific goals of these organizations, I was surprised that employers represented by HR could provide key inputs in determining the appropriate unions that would sufficiently represent the interest of the workers (Crews, 2021a). This aspect was quite surprising because I thought that unions are often antagonistic to companies. However, the realization that they can work closely with the employers to highlight areas that require strengthening to improve workforce satisfaction was mind-blowing. Such an aspect illustrates the wide reach of HR as a practice.
The discussions about employees’ benefits have changed my thoughts by underscoring the value of integrating additional packages other than competitive salaries to attract talent and avert increased turnover.
