The president of the United States is required to appoint the five members of the National Labor Relations Board and in most cases, the president tends to appoint representatives on the board whose views, agendas, and goals align with his own. Politically, this helps in strengthening the president’s administration and leadership because the decisions made by the NLRB members ideally represent the administration’s thinking. The political outlook of the president also plays a role in the appointments such that these appointments will largely depend on the political party represented by the new president. For this reason, it is common to see democrats appointing board members who are also democrats whereas most republican presidents tend to choose Republicans on the board (Estreicher, 2020).
