Attacks by terrorist groups using weapons of mass destruction (WMD) remains a potential outcome for the United States. A recent article by Wilson Center (2023) reveals that despite the multifaceted threats, jihadist groups presented the most direct dangers to homeland security through their dynamic inspirations of local and international actors. Wright et al. (2017) acknowledge these outfits’ sophistication and ongoing global concealed expansion, making them a notable threat to the United State’s security. Thus, security agencies are alert about their likely WMD approaches to deter potential attacks.
Jihadist groups’ primary agenda is to thwart the dominance of the West and install an Islamic power because they consider global injustices consistent with Western influence. This aspect agrees with Wright et al.’s (2017) observation that renowned groups such as the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda fight an attrition war. Bergen et al. (2019) indicate that the players advance their attacks in retaliation against perceived anti-Muslimism perspectives and marginalization.
