The organization that fosters diversity and nurtures an inclusive culture enjoys a broader range of perspectives, hence widening the capacity for problem-solving and decision-making toward better overall performance. Besides, embracing DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) practices improves employee satisfaction and retention by ensuring the workforce reflects the diverse society in which the organization operates. This paper discusses how diversity and inclusion influence the behavior of individuals in an organization, the role that leadership plays in promoting DEI, and the challenges faced by an organization on its journey to inclusivity.
Impact on Organizational Behavior
Diversity and inclusion affect organizational behaviors such as team dynamics, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making. Teams comprising different people maintain a myriad of perspectives, further aiding in innovating and creatively solving problems (OpenStax, 2019). This phenomenon occurs when the teams come up with diverse ways of thinking, thus managing to come up with solutions that are far-reaching, in-depth, and effective. However, the team dynamics can quickly go awry with such a diverse number of people. If proper management has yet to be provided to the sets of cultural norms, styles of communication, and problem-solving approaches, misunderstandings and conflicts may arise. Inclusion makes every team player feel valued and respected for their contribution toward collaboration and productivity (Jiang et al., 2022). Organizations should train employees in cultural competency to let them understand and appreciate the different ways of communicating with their colleagues.
Diversity enhances the benefits derived from the availability of multiple viewpoints in solving problems and making decisions, thus allowing teams to discover a broader range of options and, hence, make better decisions. Research findings show that diverse teams do better than homogeneous teams in brainstorming innovative ideas and coming up with informed decisions (OpenStax, 2019). However, if such diversity is not supported by an inclusive environment in which people feel comfortable sharing their opinions, diversity benefits may not be realized to their fullest. Diversity and inclusion are strong catalysts for organizational behavior, giving rise to innovation, agility, and problem-solving because of the breadth of perspective. By bringing unique, culturally founded views, diverse teams develop creative solutions and more comprehensive decisions (Mita, 2024). Organizations should focus on diversity and inclusion to help all potential benefits become real through enhanced team cohesion, collaboration, and overall performance in varied teams.
