Case 1: Jamie Turner at MLI, Inc.
1.1 Leadership and management are often interchanged by a lot of people but there are important differences between the two. In this case, we will be comparing Pat Cardullo, the president at MLI, Inc. and Jamie Turner, the vice president of the sales and marketing of the same company. Differences between managers and leaders are evident in the case with Pat Cardullo and Jamie Turner. Pat Cardullo’s ways are of a manager, he gives directions, reacts to change, and executes power over his subordinates. Jamie Turner, on the other hand, exhibits traits of being a leader by asking questions, creating change in the workplace, and developing power with the people he works with (Turk, 2007). Evidence of these differences is seen in the case when Cardullo gave orders to Dennis regarding the change in the system, without actually considering the suggestion of Dennis who is in explaining the benefits of the computerized system and the cons of Cardullo’s idea. Also, he believed that people should be managed and that the order comes from those in the administrative and high positions. While Jamie Turner asks questions instead of ordering people around. He is the same towards Cardullo and with his other coworkers when questions need to be asked. He also asks the right questions to the ideas that are presented to him, promoting different points of view and critical thinking. Cardullo was also seen reacting to change, and not exactly in an ideal manner, like when he walked out of a meeting and also had tantrums when Jamie Turner presents him with ideas for the improvement in the system of the company. In these scenarios also, we see Jamie Turner creating change and innovation in the workplace. Cardullo also shows power over his subordinates, emphasizing the position he holds, seen with the way he censures and humiliate people in public, and also throwing tantrums when things are not to his liking. He also groups his employees as capable and incapable. Turner treats his coworkers differently, and in the scenario with Tim Kelly, he was able to utilize the skills of Tim Kelly while empowering the person instead of putting him down.
1.2 The first case shows us issues between Pat Cardullo and Jamie Turner, and these issues are because of their differences in how they handle their responsibilities. Their manner of management and leading affect their workplace dynamics and decision-making. Three instances where their differences are highlighted were during their treatment towards Tim Kelly, and these seemingly small actions show a lot in the way they decide for the organization. Cardullo is not able to utilize the skills of Tim Kelly and because of this, the company is not getting the best from the skills of the employees, while we see with Jamie Turner how he consults and acknowledges the skills of the people around him, not only focusing on what he can offer to the company. Another instance was when Cardullo pushes through with the strategic plan of pricing the goods which do not perform well on the charts, as well as with the issue regarding changing the system with Dennis, but because of his authoritarian style of management, he does not listen to the suggestion and input of his other coworkers. Lastly, Cardullo’s management style showed the importance of playing the hero in situations that are not beneficial to the company. This was seen many times when he did not acknowledge good ideas from Turner because of the skills that this newly hired employee has, and every time that he can meet the expectations and even surpass them, Cardullo does not seem to appreciate it. The examples that can be seen in this case shows how the style of management and leadership can be beneficial or destructive to the company (Turk, 2007). One is not necessarily better than the other because there are both pros and cons in being a manager and a leader, that is why it is important to find the balance in between to function optimally for the best interest of the organization (Griffin, 2013).
1.3 A manager is not a negative thing, because it makes sure that the tasks and the job gets done, but similarly to Cardullo’s case he is having issues with relationships around him, also affecting workplace dynamics and productivity. A step that a manager can take is to learn how to motivate his employees to share the same vision of the company, also affecting productivity and employee satisfaction. In addition to this, improvement in the way of giving feedback will also create huge improvement because aside from helping the employee execute his tasks in a better way, it will also promote a feeling of purpose and boost the employee’s morale, which will have an overall effect with how he does he obligations to the company (Wood & Wood, 2002). Lastly, which is also applicable to Cardullo would be opening the communication as a two-way street instead of a top-to-bottom style. This will help build trust between the management and the employees, showing importance to what they have to input for the betterment of the company. It will also be beneficial because it will generate more ideas for improvement and innovation of the whole process of the company.
1.4 The common misconceptions are that leaders don’t work, they were born to lead, and that the focus of leaders is making everyone happy to gain followers (Birk, 2010). Leaders are the ones who do the work first and motivates the people by leading as an example, which is very different from the misconception as if saying that leaders do not experience hardships with their works. They are also those who can empathize with the employees because they can ...
