Lee S. Camero, an 11-year-old student at MC Elementary School in Bronx, NY, is facing academic and behavioral challenges. He has difficulty with reading and math, has poor handwriting and spelling, and is often inattentive during class. His teacher approached the School-Based Support Team (SBST) for help, and they used Response to Intervention (RTI) techniques with limited success. In response, Lee's mother wrote to the Committee on Special Education (CSE) requesting an evaluation, which began the following week. Lee is fluent in Spanish and learned English at the age of 4 or 5. He resides with his mother, grandmother, and three siblings in a rental apartment in the Bronx. Lee's mother works as a nurse's aide, while his father works in construction in Mexico, sending money to the family when possible.
Strengths
As initially noted, Lee is fluent in Spanish and learned English at 4 or 5. This is one of the very few strengths that can be noted from the case study provided. He likes to play with toys. He also likes to read about fish and marine life and its related science. He also likes to read little text.
Weaknesses
The study does highlight various challenges that Lee faces. These include his difficulty with reading and math, illegible handwriting and spelling, and inattentiveness in class. Additionally, Lee is described as a loner who does not engage much with his peers or when it comes to online learning.
