Organisation’s overview and operations management challenges Provide a clear and comprehensive overview of the organisation, and define the scope of your analysis. Whether it is the organisation’s entire operations, a particular region, local market or a specific business unit. It is visiting all the segments of the oil and gas value chain- upstream (exploration and production), midstream (processing and transport), and downstream (refining, chemicals, and retail), and other subsidiary industries such as SABIC contribute their bit to the portfolio of petrochemicals. Aramco, in fact, refines approximately 9 million barrels per day of crude oil in 2024 on a sustainable capacity of 12 million barrels. Although it had the highest financial performance in the industry, it was experiencing volatility in the market; net profit declined to $106.2 billion, and the free cash flow dropped to $16 to $85.3 billion (Saba, 2025). This critical analysis of the organization is done in Saudi Arabia through established models of operations management, and the analysis is based on the performance of the organization, its challenges, supply chain structure, risk environment, and strategic areas that require improvement. Organization Overview & Operational Challenges Aramco’s operational model, while historically successful, is increasingly misaligned with the agility required in today’s volatile energy market, a gap most evident when assessed through the 4Vs framework as Volume, Variety, Variation, and Visibility. With huge volumes of millions of barrels per day production, Aramco works with an extensive product portfolio, and sells and deals with natural gas, crude, refined fuels, and petrochemicals. Having a high-volume and high-variety environment poses a challenge in terms of coordination and scheduling (Rashid, 2023). Geopolitics and OPEC+ production choice also pose a great level of variation in demand that the company has to work with. The 12% drop in realized oil prices to $80.2/barrel not only eroded Aramco’s margins but also exposed the fragility of its value chain, especially given that 3 million barrels/day of spare capacity remained underutilized, representing sunk opportunity costs. It is also another complication of forecasting since the upstream operations are low in visibility. Being a mostly B2B and government organization, Aramco is isolated from end-consumer indicators. This undermines its adaptability to fast changes in the market. However, at the same time, the adoption of the OSPAS system has led to better visibility of the internal supply chain, making it agile and real-time responsive (Rashid, 2023). Aramco has a tradition of quality and costs; the company has the lowest upstream production cost in the world, and it has stability in supply even under strain. As an example, Abqaiq and Khurais were hit by drone attacks in 2019, but it took eleven days to resume production (Kariri & Al Dossary, 2025). Nevertheless, it is not as fast or flexible as required, particularly in switching over to renewables. The application of the Seven Wastes of Lean provides additional detail. Through strategic reserves, excess inventory, and overproduction bind up capital. Wastes of transportation and motion are observable because of remote locations such as those found in Shaybah. Waiting waste is caused by regulatory compliance, and overprocessing is caused by manual processes.
