Introduction
Conflicts are inevitable in organizations. As individuals interact in the workplace, they are likely to misunderstand one another. If not managed well, conflicts can have an adverse effect on the performance of employees. Whereas conflicts are normal in organizations, they should be managed well. Leaders are in a better position to address some of the issues that arise in organizations. They can use their position to manage conflicts and ensure co-existence in an organization. Communication is one of the most effective tools that a leader can utilize to manage conflict
A key leadership trait that can assist in managing conflict.
The ability to be a good communicator can help a leader resolve a conflict. All conflicts result from misunderstanding, and if a good communicator can address the issues in an amicable way, then the conflict can be resolved easily, and all parties will be satisfied with the outcome CITATION Ann13 \l 1033 (Chastain, 2013). One of the key elements of a good communicator is being a good listener. If a leader is a good listener, he/she will be able to listen to both parties and understand the root of their contention. It is only after understanding the root issue that a leader can weigh in and help resolve the conflict CITATION Ann13 \l 1033 (Chastain, 2013). A good communicator also packages the information intended to another person in a way it is accurate and easy to understand. He/she knows the best channel to choose to relay his/her verdict or information on how the conflict can be resolved. For example, if it is a misunderstanding between two employees over their personal relationship, he would not address it through a broadcast email to all employees but rather would call them to a secluded place preferably an office and talk them into addressing their issues amicably. The whole workforce doesn’t need to know they have a misunderstanding. Therefore, being an excellent communicator is a key skill which can help you to get the facts about the conflict between the two parties, and resolve it amicably. If the issue is beyond the scope of the leader, the leader knows how to involve the right people to help resolve the conflict. Such basic elements of communication, especially being a good listener and understanding how to handle sensitive matters, can help resolve most conflicts in any work environment.
Tool a leader can adapt to improve communication within the organization.
Having an unpartitioned work environment. Unpartitioned work environment helps the workers to ‘bump’ into each other and communicate more. If the workers meet more frequently, they will communicate and form stronger interpersonal bonds which help communication flow within the organization. Since all the workers are in an open space, they will also share some office facilities such as the printer, coffee machine, etc. These facilities in the office are meeting points where employees can talk while they await their turn to use the equipment. It encourages workers to be friendly at a personal level and form stronger interpersonal bonds....
