Every organizational leadership focuses on building and leading teams. Different types of teams exist within the organization which are mandated to achieve organizational objectives. An organization can form a team to accomplish a specific project, respond to complaints or to enhance efficiency. From the case study, several mistakes were identified in quality control department and in response, Thomas chose to split the production department into various production teams withinin the production division (Sarker, S., & Sahay, S. 2003). This is a new approach and has to be implemented to minimize mistakes. Teams should be composed of employees with different skills and expertise which are interconnected and, in this case, Thomas has organized the team to be composed of mechanics and engineers (Miller, C.J., Kim, B., Silverman, A. et al. 2018).
When implementing a new team, several issues normally develops which require strategies to mitigate them. Team development is created through various stages and through these stages, challenges will be identified and possible solutions developed. Thomas has to consider these stages for effective production teams (McEwan D., et al 2017).
1 Forming stage
This is where the objective of the team is set by the team leader and shared with the rest of the team. Team members will get to know each other, understand the objectives and functions of the team. This is also where resistance to change may be encountered because of the new development which may be due to coercion or fear of unknown. To address this, team leadership and organizational management should instill culture embracing change to its employees and clearly setting out objectives (Farrell, M., SCHMITT, M., & HEINEMANN, G. 2001).
2 Storming and norming stage
In this stage, possible conflicts and disagreements may arise among the team members. Conflicts may be due to ideological differences and personality issues. This stage is so critical as the differences may escalate which will hinder the operation of them team. Conflicts resolution mechanisms should be in place and ensuring there are open communication channels.
3 Performance stage
This is where the main objective of the groups is executed. All resources necessary are availed. Team leader will segregate duties and give directions on how each member performs his duties. They will begin working and reviews done. Team leader must examine how the overall implementation will impact the organization (Johnson, S., et al 2002)
4 Adjourning stage
It occurs when the objective of the group has been achieved and therefore the team has to be suspended or may be assigned different task. Performance feedback, rewards, and recognition may be given This is when mistakes in the production department have been minimized and proper controls set (Farrell, M., SCHMITT, M., & HEINEMANN, G. 2001).
