To a great extent, the interviewer utilized open-ended questions to elicit useful and additional information from the employees. The open-ended were extremely important in gathering information that could otherwise have been left out by the employees. When interviewing Kareem, the interviewer asks how he got terminated. Kareem gives a short answer, and here, the interviewer asks, "how so?" This open-ended question prompted Kareem to explain in detail how the termination happened. When interviewing Janet, the interviewer also employs open-ended questions to trigger more responses. After Janet explains that she reported Kareem's behavior to Thomas, the interviewer asks her, "…so what happened next?" In the interview with Michael, the interviewer asks questions such as "what else can you share?" and "was there anything else you observed?" These open-ended questions were instrumental in helping the interviewer elicit more information about the circumstances surrounding Kareem's termination.
The interviewer verbally summarized key ideas about the investigation to the employees before asking them questions about Kareem's termination. At the beginning of each interview, the interviewer briefly describes what he seeks from them and goes straight to the point about the situation at hand. In the interview with Kareem, the interviewer informed him that he would expect complete and truthful information to help him understand his concerns. This was important in helping him understand what the interview was all about.
