Response To “Where Are the People of Color in Children’s Books?”
The article “Where Are the People of Color in Children’s Books?” by Walter Dean Myers underscores the woeful underrepresentation of people of color in children’s books and the impact it has on children of color. Myers uses his own life experience to illustrate the importance of children reading about characters they can relate with and see their own circumstances (Myers, 2014). I support Myer’s dissatisfaction with the lack of diversity in children’s books. It is disheartening that in this day and age when people of color make a greater proportion of America’s population, most children’s book continue to revolve around white characters. I feel that the issue Myers is trying to address in the article reflects a growing national awareness of the major gaps in children literature and education in general.
