Introduction
China is one of the world's richest historical countries boasting of ancient civilization. China has a mysterious and long history, about 5,000 years. China traces her culture to a blend of small tribes like any other great civilizations of the world. These small original tribes expanded to what is China today (Sima & Watson, 2011). The history of China records that Xia Dynasty is the oldest dynasty with Yuanmou man being the oldest hominoid in China. The country also documents a number of eminent people who contributed to the nation's enrichment and development experienced today. Among them are emperors such as Taizhong of the Tang, great poets such as Qu Yuan, and philosophers such as Confucius and so on (Lewis, 2008). However, this paper seeks to discuss the major changes in political structures, social and economic life that occurred during the Sui dynasty, the Tang dynasty and the Song dynasty in China.
The Sui dynasty (581- 618)
This dynasty was founded by Sui Wendi. It was characterized by major political and socio-economic changes. The major changes that occurred in terms of political structures, social and economic life included the reduction of the social gap between the rich and the poor, system equalization, enhanced agricultural productivity, and the centralization of government power. There was a great improvement on defense, and a massive expansion and spread of Buddhism. After Yangdi took over the throne, he did not seek any support from the nomads. He championed for and restores Confucian examination and education system of the bureaucrats. Through the support Yangdi provided to the educational forms, he lost the support of the nomads. He began doing expensive construction work (Ebrey & Walthall, 2013).
The political life was also characterized with various changes. The new political system established three political departments and six ministries, the first in the history of China. Under Sui system, there was an enhancement of royal power and work division became detailed in court. The method of talent selection was also overhauled (Duiker & Spielvogel, 2013). The Imperial Examination System replaced the Hierarchical System. This connected studies, taking examinations, and getting to an official position. This dynasty had a profound influence on talent selection in the history of China. However, Yangdi was very luxurious. These luxury expenses cost him the public support and were later assassinated by a minister. Invading Gogurye was the biggest factor that resulted into the fall of Yangdi. Li Yuan took advantage of this and began a new dynasty foundation referred to as Tang (Duiker & Spielvogel, 2013).
The Tang dynasty (618-907)
This dynasty was founded by Li as a result of the fall of Sui Dynasty. The Li gained power after the collapse of the Sui Dynasty. This was the greatest historic period in China. There were several social, political and economic changes that took place. The politics, economy, military strength, and culture reached an unparalleled advanced level. The Tang Dynasty saw a wonderful change in the culture of China through the modern ...
