The Courage that My Mother Had: An Analysis
Edna St. Vincent Millay`s "The Courage that My Mother Had" is a confusing poem. In the first stanza, Millay associates a mother to that of a rock or granite. In most literatures, a rock usually means strong and courageous which makes Millay`s description of the mother as someone brave. The first stanza also gives a feel of longing not only for the child`s loss of a mother but also of the mother`s courage for when the mother died her courage "went with her, and is with her still." The next two lines of this stanza tell the reader that the mother was "quarried" from New England where many other brave people come from and she died with many other courageous people. The next stanza, the child seems to be happy with what was given to him or her by the mother. The "golden brooch" then symbolizes the treasure/s that the mother had left the child.
