Prompt Two: Teaching Mindful Interpersonal Communication Skills to a Group of Colleagues at Work
Mindful interpersonal communication refers to being mindful when communicating with other people. Training other people place the trainer/instructor in a position where they get to learn essential skills and principles. When training other people on mindful interpersonal communication skills, I must apply mindfulness to the practice. As a trainer, I will ensure that I talk and thoughtfully respond to my colleagues throughout the training session. Secondly, I will be present during the conversation so that my students can sense that I agree with them on the available topic and that I value them, their time, and what they are saying.
Principles and Skills
Throughout the semester, I have learned several skills and principles that I would incorporate into interpersonal communication with my colleagues. These principles include creating and building an intention, demonstrating my presence in the conversation, being open-minded and non-judgmental, and treating my students compassionately. These principles are embedded in two major components: mindful listening and speaking.
Mindful listening is an essential component of communication. In my instruction, I would strive to employ mindful listening to understand what any of my colleagues might be conveying in the interactive session. Mindful listening can be occluded when learners/the audience engage in various actions. These include comparisons, silent rehearsal of what they plan to say, mind-reading behavior, and being judgmental (Cunningham et al., 2020).
