Summary of Positions
Samantha Deane argues in her paper "Dressing Diversity: Politics of Difference and the Case of School Uniforms," published in 2015 in the journal "Journal Philosophical Studies volume 46," that when students wear uniforms, their freedom of expression is constrained. According to her, such restrictions create an oppressive environment where pupils can develop their ideas. Deane understands that the concept of a school uniform and the policies governing uniforms are ironic. She wonders how it is possible to grow minds while limiting their possibilities. It may look necessary, according to Deane (2015).
Nonetheless, school uniforms are used to conceal student diversity and social inequities and prevent pupils from exercising their right to free expression. She even cites the 1st Amendment to the United Declares Constitution, which states that everyone has the right to express themselves. As a result, uniform laws and school uniforms must be abolished. There's no way we can teach pupils about different historical figures who struggled for freedom of expression and speech when they're still wearing their uniforms (Deane, 2015).
Anderson Wendell wrote a policy study titled "School Dress Codes and Uniform Policies," released in 2002. Wendell claims in this study that uniform policy in educational institutions is a crucial response to different conflicts that have arisen as a result of the debate about wearing uniforms in school. He says that wearing a school uniform helps kids focus on their schoolwork rather than their attire. He demonstrates that wearing a uniform is one of the ways to ensure that schools must order.
