I stay motivated in the writing process by leveraging perceived competence. According to Syrewicz (2022), perceived competence is an intrinsic motivation factor writers experience when they genuinely perceive some benefits from the writing process. More specifically, writers authentically feel they are leveraging positive feedback from the writing process or some other task context attribute. Leveraging perceived competence helps the writer sustain motivation throughout the writing process, especially when their skills surpass the challenge presented by the assignment. In this vein, I maintain motivation by challenging my skills to ensure the task does not get boring (Syrewicz, 2022). When I feel optimally challenged by the task, I experience significant motivation throughout the writing process rather than when I have more skills than the task demands. Therefore, the writing process demands that the writer feels they have the skills to meet the task demands and expectations.
