Define social disorganization
Social disorganization is the inability of members of a community to pursue shared values or to tackle jointly experienced challenges. It is the disruption of an established way of doing things that everyone in a society should adhere to. Areas with social disorganization are characterized by high poverty rates. It can also be referred to as the failure by social institutions and organizations in society. Moreover, it is caused by differences in diversity and experiences. These institutions include the church, school and the police. It is caused by population heterogeneity, poverty and residential mobility. An example is gang culture which has an informal leadership structure as well as an informal jurisdiction.

Moreover, the main objective of social organization is to maintain law and order. Consequently, its disruption will result in a state of anarchy. Moreover, it protects the public from exploitation by any single authority such as the government. Everyone strives to uphold it because upsetting it will lead to a state of instability in society which allows some individuals to take advantage of the system primarily for economic purposes. Furthermore, as some areas slide into poverty, they develop resentment towards an established authority as they use it as a scapegoat for their suffering. This creates an enabling environment for organized crime which recruits the disgruntled youths and enforces an informal leadership structure which are often used to intimidate and exploit the locals. In addition, the poor often lack the resources to be organized or are ignored by the government due to lack of resources or declining geographical interest. As a result, organized crime steps in to fill the void caused by the lack of active police engagement. Furthermore, the rise of anarchy and individualism forces individuals to seek comfort in organizations, whether legal or illegal.
The social disorganization theory draws a correlation between social disorganization and organized crime. This means that the residence of an individual plays a significant role in determining whether or not they will be involved in illegal activities. For example, young people in underprivileged areas engage in a subculture that involves criminal activities (Wilson, 2012). As a result, they are more likely to engage in delinquent behavior as compared to other youths.
