Introduction
The color people, set up in rural Georgia, focuses on the life of black American women. It addresses sensitive issues that these women faced in the traditional American history. Some of the issues include low position in the society and sexual abuse from men. This paper seeks to give a response to question 2 of the assignment.
Alphonso was Nettie and Celie stepfather who was selfish and abusive towards the girls. As a result of his behavior, he lied to Celie by not telling her who her real father was. Their mother was sick therefore she could not tell Celie the truth. Alonso knowing the truth, he decided to keep silent and took advantage of the situation by controlling their mother’s wealth. Therefore, Alonso lied to Celie so that he could control their parent’s wealth.
Celie did not enjoy a normal life during her childhood. She was 14 years old but uneducated. However, by the time she was 14, she had given birth to two children; Adam and Olivia. Her stepfather Alphonso was responsible for her two pregnancies and took all the two babies forcefully from Celie. Furthermore, her stepfather treated her harshly and frequently beat her.
