Think about some of your favorite fantasy or superhero movies and books. What is the best example you can come up with of a movie or book that depicts the hero struggling with his or her shadow? Describe their struggle. How did the hero resolve their struggle with the shadow? Can the shadow ever be beneficial to personality development? A person tries to please everyone and appear flawless in their presence. As a result, a person’s negative thoughts, emotions, and actions are oppressed and referred to as the “shadow.” The shadow may include aggressive impulses and other feelings that are deemed unacceptable or frightening (Matić, 2020). Everyone has a shadow that must be acknowledged. It is so powerful; thus, a person must learn how to deal with his shadow and not let it overrule him (Mahoney, 2018).
The shadow has also been incorporated in films and literature. In the movie “Hulk,” the main character is Bruce Banner, and he struggles with his shadow. Unfortunately, he is a great scientist, but one of his studies awakens the beast within him. When his emotions are triggered or when exposed to gamma radiation, he transforms into the Hulk, a wrathful green monster that lives within him. Banner’s oppressed emotion, particularly anger, manifests as the Hulk. Hulk’s goal is to protect Banner, but innocent people’s lives are compromised in the process.
