Typically, English teaching involves teaching the grammar rules to the learners. Teaching the language syntax and vocabulary is an important step to teaching any language. Much of what is learnt will however help the student identify to be grammatically competent. Learners of this type of learning may not get the competence of a native learner when it comes to performance. Of other methods of teaching that has proved to be better in teaching English in contextual teaching. That is teaching using situations that provokes the learner use of language in context. Such method could involve dramatization or simulating real life situations to learn. Contextual teaching enhances language awareness as the learner will use language as they would have in reality.
Contextual applies to all learning levels. In lower learning levels, teaching relies more on concrete concepts such as when learning body parts. As learners advance, learning involves more abstract ideas. For example, teaching of parts of speech in an intermediate level, one would not consider the mere identification of the word group but even the construction and syntax. This may basically involve analysis of normal conversations or popular songs.
The language contexts used are chosen from what learners are likely to use. This is because language awareness involves the practical use of the language.
