The article “What makes Japanese painting Japanese?” by Sadako Ohki attempts to differentiate between Japanese from Chinese painting. Ohki (2007) acknowledges that the question regarding these two counties and their painting is the most frequently asked. In answering the question, Ohki (2007) has not compared Chinese and Japanese paintings. On the contrary, the author has attempted to describe several paintings in terms of the characteristics and properties that prove that they are indeed Japanese. The author has made a significant effort to illustrate those aspects of Japanese painting that distinguish them from other countries, despite acknowledging that Japanese art may have aspects borrowed from across the Asian continent, especially China.
