The psychologist’s curiosity about how people learn from their surroundings and create memories from these experiences induced them to do experiments for ages. In fact, learning is an essential human phenomenon for survival and growth. To talk about early behaviorist psychologists, Ivan Pavlov and B.F skinner are most well-known for their foundational theories about learning and memory. These psychologists analyzed observable actions and changes in human behavior and set concepts that help to understand how experiences are connected to behavior through either association or consequences. As follows, psychologists expanded the ideas, and modern psychology seems to focus on the importance of mental processes in learning, such as cognitive dissonance, which explains how people alter their opinions or behaviors when something seems to torment their mental peace. As a result of combining these three theories, named classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and cognitive dissonance, a strong context can help us know about human learning and experience. This essay explains these three theories and their analysis through research, while applying them to a real-life example, so that it may become clear that these theories have real-life applicability. Classical Conditioning by Ivan Pavlov Classical conditioning was introduced by Pavlov, who referred to learning through association. For his theory, he introduced two basic stimuli, a neutral stimulus (NS) and an unconditioned stimulus (UCS), to explain the connection between learning and association. For this experiment, he studied dogs. At first, he observed that dogs salivated not only when looking at food, but also when looking at the person who used to bring them food. Furthermore, he paired the sound of a bell as NS with food as UCS. While repeating it multiple times, he concluded that dogs began to salivate when the bell rang. Hence, the bell became a conditioned stimulus that caused a conditioned response, while linked with an unconditioned stimulus, which is food (Pavlov, 1927). Classical conditioning has remarkable importance in the field of psychology and is considered the most significant contribution to understanding the process of learning and memory (Rehman et al., 2024). However, it has limitations; for example, a study shows that classical conditioning cannot be applied to all aspects of life, such as consumer behavior (Pornpitakpan, 2012). When products are paired with pleasant stimuli, the consumer behavior is changed from person to person; hence, it has varied results, including people who take zero interest in products.
