Language development makes a major part of a child’s growth and development since children need language skills to communicate effectively. Everyone also needs language skills to express themselves and their feelings, and understand other people. One of the ways children develop language and speech skills for such purposes is through hearing other people talk and then imitating them (Durkin, Mok, & Conti-Ramsden, 2013). Children repeat what they hear from other people and how they hear them pronounced. This also explains why children grow up with the same accent that surrounded them while they were growing up. Children are good at imitating, and this goes up to the morals they borrow from those around them.
Children also learn language skills through their own way of communicating while at the age of 3-12 months. They speak to parents and those around them, albeit in inaudible and unrecognized words. They also learn how to laugh and coo, playing with sounds, and start communicating through gestures. The jargon phase follows after this babbling, and children start sounding as if they are holding decent conversations (Muсiz, Silver, & Stein, 2014). The progress continues and children pronounce their first words at the age of 12-18 months. The most common words are the words used in their environment to refer to ‘father’ and ‘mother’. They continue learning simple words and eventually how to put them together in a juggled way, until they eventually learn it.
Children also learn language and speech through getting support from parents and those around them. By the time they hit 2 years, children start speaking more clearly and holding short conversations (Levine, Pace, Luo, Hirsh-Pasek, Golinkoff, de Villiers, & Wilson, 2020). They also begin developing their own opinions and ideas by the time they are 8. This only becomes possible if they are accorded the support that they need by their parents. Such language support is very crucial to their growth and development. Parents and others around children should give the children an opportunity to write, hear, read, and speak in a particular or different language.
