Introduction
The subject of music as a relaxing and remedial agent is a current debate that is being discussed in the modern society. The use of music to improve our physical, physiological and psychological health is an interesting theme that has attracted many researchers to investigate the fact behind it. Music remedy involves heeding to songs, dancing, singing or using music devices.
Melody can trigger cerebral impulses that create a feeling of relaxation and reduce negative emotional feelings than depresses a human being. People should be encouraged to use music as a healing agent when sick, or when there is need to prevent mood disorders to ensure they live a healthy life.
Background Information
Melody is processed in the cerebrum, and listening to music has the same effect as physical body exercise on the brain. There are transitory advantages of paying attention to music such as enhanced rate of material processing in the cerebrum, brain retention, thinking and awareness. In addition music improves inventiveness in an individual who regularly pay attention to music. It also improves the sign attributed to cerebrovascular disorder such as impaired speech, cognition and body movement (Pritchard, 2014).
People who listen to music during treatment procedure feel less pain than those in silent rooms. Studies suggest that patients undergoing surgical procedure require lesser sedation than those in quiet rooms where no music is played from the background. Also, body immunity improves faster for patients who frequently listen to soothing music using their headphones (Pritchard, 2014).
The music genre determines the healing effect of the music. Harsh rhythms aggravate emotional distress to the listeners. They cause irritation and physiological body stress. Yet, some people consider such music and belief that they relieve psychological stress. People have different preference of music and select certain kinds of melody as remedial agent when under emotional or medical suffering (Pritchard, 2014).
Most of the existing literatures show that music has relieving effect on people experiencing stress. Other studies conducted present contrasting argument on these effects of music. It is therefore the goal of this assignment to address the effect of music on people who experience emotional and physical body health issues (Pritchard, 2014).
Music Relief Emotional Stress
Music has a pronounced prospective of healing people with stress. Physiological body stress triggers the body to release cortisol hormone that helps fight the cause of stress. This activates a cascade of events that restores body homeostasis. A person can become sick if the body produces inadequate hormone, or a disparity exist between cortisol release and the body demand. This is true especially in hospitalized patient. Studies show that playing soft music to patients in hospital can enhance the speed of healing (W Nichols, 2015).
It has been demonstrated that music relieves functional, expressive and intellectual negative effects of anxiety. Relaxing sound vibration reduce agony in sick people by improving their cardiac rate and breathing rate. Standard music maintains stress enzymes at optimum level compared to those who listen to usual music. Soothing music accelerate the rate of stress response in people, thus improving their well-being (W Nichols, 2015).
A study was conducted in the on sick patients with vision problem scheduled for surgery in a hospital. The patients were divided in to two groups; one group underwent the normal preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative treatment procedure without presence of music, while the other group was exposed to a musical environment during the procedure. Prior to the procedure, the members of the two groups had a common reading of blood pressure. After the procedure, it was found that the members who remained in silent rooms had poor prognosis than those exposed to music. This demonstrated that listening to soft music allay anxiety in patients awaiting an operative procedure and reduces the risk factor for complication after the procedure. Soothing music therefore has stress reducing effect on people (W Nichols, 2015).
