Erikson explains that personality develops through a predetermined order evident in the eight stages of psychosocial development, starting infancy through adulthood. In each stage, an individual encounters conflict which may have a positive or negative consequence on personality (Knight, 2017). One Stage explained by Erikson is autonomy vs. shame and doubt, which develops when a child is around 18 months. Children at this stage start to develop a sense of control over their physical skills and even, a sense of independence (Knight, 2017). The child may get “stuck” when one develops fear to explore or familiarize with their surroundings. Often the fear develops when children are overly controlled or not given the opportunity to assert themselves, which makes them feel inadequate in their potential to thrive (Knight, 2017).
