Erikson explains that personality develops through a predetermined order evident in the eight stages of psychosocial development, starting infancy through adulthood. In each stage, an individual encounters conflict which may have a positive or negative consequence on personality (Knight, 2017). One Stage explained by Erikson is autonomy vs. shame and doubt, which develops when a child is around 18 months. Children at this stage start to develop a sense of control over their physical skills and even, a sense of independence (Knight, 2017). The child may get “stuck” when one develops fear to explore or familiarize with their surroundings.
