Preparation:



 





  1. Read the scene of your choice before watching the performance. As you read, pick out a few critical moments or turning points within the play that may be of particular interest to pay closer attention to as you watch the performance. Try to imagine how the space on the stage may be utilized by the actor to render the theme and tone of the particular scene.


  2. As you watch, pay attention to the following:




ð  Role types: are the characters on the stage of the same or different role types? How does the assignment of role type fulfill or challenge your own interpretation of the character after reading the play? Could the roles have been assigned to different role types?



ð  Performance: focus on one or some of the following areas: hand gestures, manner of walking and movement, use of props, facial expressions, how does an actor move about on the stage, the combination of and transitioning between singing and chanting, eye movement, use of water sleeves to reveal and to conceal, how do the movements and gestures support the delivery of songs or spoken lines.



ð  Choices of costumes, makeup and set designs

  4. If you are comparing and contrasting two different versions, point out different interpretations and how they may create different impressions on the part of the audience. Which version do you prefer and why?


  5. Conclusion: explain why your response to the play is valid and significant, based on what you have described in the body of the paper.

Peony Pavilion is among the famous operas in China. The narrative was composed by Tan Xianzu and published in 1598. However, there were no opera houses or theaters in China. As a result, the romantic drama took place in a garden, whereby the most important scene of Peony Pavilion took place in a garden (Harris et al., 2013). The Peony Pavilion is a romantic narrative that transcends space and time. It comprises both supernatural and dream components. For instance, Du Liniang, the protagonist in the story, takes a nap in her chamber and dreams of having an encounter with the scholar in the garden (Tang & Teng, 2012). She continues to think about the dream but dies afterward. After her death, Lui Mengmei happens to stop in the garden while going to take the civil service examination. He sees Du Liniang's portrait and loves amicably. Du Liniang's ghost visits Liu Mengmei. They both have an exciting romantic encounter, and the ghost persuades Liu Mengmei that he should disinter her, to return to life. Liu disinters Du's corpse, therefore resurrecting her.
Tan Xianzu has composed new music and adapted the original Kunqu opera score, which is performed by the composition of period instruments such as percussion ensemble, Chinese lute, and bamboo flutes (Rolston, 2002). In the old centuries, both women and men adapted the Kunqu style, thereby singing in high falsetto voices. Tan Xianzu elaborates that the technique is applicable in the supernatural, transcendent love story. Moreover, Tan Xianzu details the Kunqu opera, causing the narrative to appear dreamlike, erotic, sensitive, and silky. Furthermore, Tan Xianzu expresses that Kunqu opera perfectly fits in soul-touching, resurrection, and love stories.

Yue Meiti performed as Lui Mengmei in this version of Peony Pavilion. Ms, Meiti-Yue played a young man's role in the Kunqu theatre. It was sad for her as a teenage actress to hear that she would be playing a boy's roles on stage (Harris et al., 2013). As a result, she attempted to rebel when a teacher in drama school indicated that she should play the roles of handsome young men. However, currently, she is the most influential female actor in Kunqu history. She is regarded as the mother of operas in China, whereby she embraced the Chinese women's tradition to play men's roles. According to Yue Meiti, Kunqu opera is an art of extreme sophistication and grace. It comprises melodious musical elements, elaborate stylized and symbolism performances, and poetic lyrics. She indicates that her teacher, Yu Zhenfei, played a significant role in training her to become an excellent Kunqu Opera performer.
