The Statue of Liberty
The statue of liberty is probably one of the most significant monuments across the globe. The monument is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York. It was a gift to the US from France. The statue’s face is said to have been modeled after the sculptor's mother Charlotte. The statue of liberty is a figure of a woman in a robe holding a torch above her head with her right hand. The torch represents enlightenment. On her left hand she carries a tabula ansata with the date July 4, 1776, inscribed in Roman, the year America got its independence. At her feet lies a broken chain (McKay, D. 2017).
Despite its natural beauty, the statue of liberty is a symbol of liberation to me and all Americans at large. It represents the freedom from oppression by Britain. The chains at her feet, which can be seen from above are a symbol that American has broken free from slavery, oppression and is now an open state (Blanchet, Dard 2017). This for me is important as it assures me that I live in a free country where the rule of democracy is more significant than any individual. It convinces me that as long as I live in the land, my rights are respected. Immigrants moving to the USA for the first time are welcomed by the magnificence of the monument into a free country.
