In the short essay, Jeff Nixa brings out the basic idea of a neighbourhood. Most of the people when looking for a house to buy, they associate the structures within the neighbourhood to the perfection of the community living there. The thesis in the essay by Jeff, relates to the fact that, a neighbourhood cannot be equated to the structures, rather it relates to the people that live there. According to Jeff, the people are the pillars of the society and they make the neighbourhood. In the essay when he went out looking to buy a house on Cottage Grove Avenue, it was not the buildings and the other structures that attracted him, but the strong community in the neighbourhood. Most of the people including the real estate agent told him that is was not safe to live in the Cottage Grove Avenue. Some of the concerns, which most of the people who advised Jeff against buying a house in the neighbourhood included the resale value of the property, the schools for the children and the safety of the family in general.
According to the essay, most people will associate the neighbourhood that one lives in, with how much they have. If one lives on of the lavish neighbourhoods with elegant houses and manicured lawns, they are in the best of neighbourhoods. Value of a neighbourhood is reduced to material things while the people living in the estates are categorised by how much of the material wealth they have.
