Module 3 - Case Argumentation and Revision Case Assignment Module 3 is an Argumentative essay in which the writer takes a stance on a topical issue and provides three or more supporting points as support. After reading Marice Richter's essay, "Boy Scouts of America Votes to End Century-old Ban on Gay Scouts," write a well-organized and well-supported essay, in which you state whether you are for or against the Boys Scouts of America allowing gay scouts as members, and include three to five reasons to support your point of view. A well-organized essay has a beginning, middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction, should include an opening sentence to grab your reader’s attention. Follow the opening sentence with a brief background on the topic or situation. In this case, it would be a brief background on the issue Boy Scout of America faced. The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis statement. The thesis states the main point of the essay, which in this case, would be a statement affirming your point of view as to whether or not the Boys Scouts of America should allow gay scouts as members. A well-supported essay includes supporting points, details, and examples. For this essay, you must decide the best way to organize the body of the paper. Will you have a paragraph for each supporting reason? Will you divide the body of your paper into three paragraphs, one for each point? In any case, each body paragraph must support (explain) your reasoning (rationale) using specific details. Each body paragraph must have a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph. The conclusion typically summarizes the main points of the essay and/or closes with a lasting impression that connects the reader to their world. Be sure to proofread your essay and edit for proper grammar, punctuation, diction (word choice), and spelling, as errors in sentence skills will lower a final grade. A grade will be determined based on the Module 3 Case expectations and the Trident University General Education rubric for English. Every human being deserves to be treated equally, giving consideration to their basic physical, emotional, and sociological needs. If these basic needs are not addressed, there is high likelihood of discontent which leads to other social evils. This does not mean that being gay is a fundamental human need, but it seeks to remind everyone that gay people are also human beings. They get hurt when one pinches them, grief when in sorrow, and laugh when they are happy. The sexual orientation should not be a means to alienate an individuals, whether their sexual orientation is considered ‘inborn', acquired as result of the environment one grows in, or by choice. It is therefore required of one to appreciate and value one another as human beings. However, it should be remembered that humans share a common society (Richter, 2013). This means that each individual has the obligation to act in a manner that upholds the rights of others. One individual's right should not be an impediment or an interference to another person's right. However, the limit human rights remain to be both an expansive and controversial topic
The treatment of the gay groups does not reflect well for the Boy Scouts of America. This is because the gay people are discriminated from taking positions in the organization due to their sexual orientation. This is totally an unfair act in a society and should not be allowed in a society that seeks to uphold the rights of the all people. In a democratic society such as United States, it is unreasonable to impose ones' belief on an individual or a group of individuals since it undermines the fundamental principle of democracy. It is therefore a big leap forward to the Boy Scouts of America to finally decide to do away with the discriminative ban that restricted gay people joining their organization (Richter, 2013).
In a multi religion society, it is essential to acknowledge the beliefs of others even though they do not necessarily agree with ours. For instance the decision by the major sponsors Mormon Church to change their stand on the matter meant a lot to the kids. It shows the church's will to embrace change as well as the gay kids. In one way or another, this presents an opportune chance to get acquainted with the problems or challenges faced by the gay kids in the society. In addition, it gives the kids, a ray of hope that the society is finally starting to accept them which would be a huge boost towards their morale and enthusiasm for life (Richter, 2013). In addition, it opens a door of opportunities to these gay kids as get to enjoy the benefits the straight kids have been reaping all along from the Boy Scout of America initiative.
It is not only good to stick to the ideal values set out by each organization but also very beneficial to incorporate new ideas to an organization so as to reflect with the existing reality. The intense discussion held by the sponsors of the Boy Scout of America shows a deliberate attempt to bridge the two set of thoughts and beliefs, the secular and sacred (Richter, 2013). This two groups need work together for the overall wellbeing of the American child. Their division would result to compromising the set objectives and thereby undermine on the great strides made for past one century. They should work towards modeling ideals that both cater for the gay child and also addressing those of the straight ones. This would help in ensuring that this process is tailored to meet the requirements of each of the kids.
