One challenge I usually have while communicating in the English language is public speaking. This drove me to make a goal relevant to beat this challenge. The target was to achieve a 60% grade in all individual oral presentations on academic topics during the semester. Unfortunately, my plan went sideways where I did not achieve my target in any class presentation out of a total of two. This situation made me learn the significant mistakes I make that hinder me from achieving my desired targets, giving me a chance to work on them before the following assessment. It also helped me realize that not reaching your targets but are getting close to achieving them, shows progress meaning the goals are achievable with time.
In relation to this week’s reading of Cress, K. Learning through Serving, “Failure with the Best of Intentions,” the situation above has relevance. The chief concept being portrayed by the text is that negative situations such as perceptions of failure can undoubtedly give room for a lot of learning. It provides an alternative view of failure, how to anticipate its possibilities and how to respond to failure resiliently. The text employs the concept of ‘roadblocks and flat tires’ to describe failure. Failure sometimes is a situation that is usually inevitable to skip during advancement to a particular goal. The good thing is we can prepare for and dodge some failure situations. This can be done by first understanding the dynamics between failure and success, anticipating common obstacles expected on the way and finally learning from the situation and responding appropriately. The response can significantly impact the outcome in the long run.
