For change to be implemented in a society, there is the need for people to unite and bring it. The power is always in the hands of the people, and this is essentially what social change is all about. When the regime of the day is oppressive and even punitive, it is upon the oppressed majority to agitate for their rights. In the early days of the American society, such was the case. Oppression was the order of the day, with racism and inequality being so normal that even laws were formulated for the same. Luckily, there were social activists at the time, who acted as change agents for the society.
Although the list contains some of the most significant change agents to ever live, Rosa Parks’ efforts align more with those of Martin Luther King than those of the other change agents. Born in 1913 in Alabama to James McCauley and Leona Edwards, Rosa Parks is known for refusing to give up her bus seat and starting the bus boycott movement. Rosa Parks was a quiet leader who did not seek any limelight but had a significant amount of determination and courage. Her determination and courageous act of defying segregation laws helped to drive the civil rights movement forward by motivating people to protest against racism. In essence, her open defiance to the laws of th time, especially at a period when the blacks had no privilege whatsoever, helped create a sense of realization that the segregation laws could be fought against.
