In the first chapter on Glass, Steven Johnson focuses on the history of glassmaking and how this has evolved and been influential in other inventions such as mirrors. Silicon dioxide (SiO2) or silica was first used for ornamentation, but the Roman Empire used advanced technology to transform the substance into glass. It is surprising that experimentation influenced the growth and use of glass from visual artisans to become an everyday object through mirrors, buildings, and even scientific devices such as the telescope.
