Language is a significant part of the identity of a group of people. However, some languages continue to grow in terms of use while others, such as Latin are limited academic use. Moreover, some die completely. The vitality or endangerment of a language depends on social factors.
First, the population of people using a particular language determines whether it will survive. A language that is used by a small group of people is likely to disappear as they interact with other language groups, intermarry and die. According to Crystal (2009), 3000 languages died within 1,200 days. All these languages were used by a small group of people. On the other hand, languages that are used by a large group of people grow.
Second, the failure to pass on the language to the next generation endangers it. Third, the movement towards the use of few languages is economically driven. This is because economic activities stand to benefit from the use of a few languages. This benefits some languages at the expense of others.
Furthermore, conquering groups ended up assimilating the small groups (Wurm & Heyward, 2001). In addition, urban cultures endanger languages as people adopt a common language. However, those communities that are determined to preserve their language can continual vitality.
In addition, the education system, the mass media and globalization emphasize the development of standard languages (Janson, 2011). This has led of the growth of English and French. As a result, indigenous languages have been threatened.
