There is a faction of individuals who believe that taming the influx of immigrants can preserve national security. Others believe that immigration impedes economic growth in some cases. Even amidst the multiple cases of advocacy to eliminate the accommodation of immigrants, some individuals still believe that opening borders to immigrants bears only positive outcomes for the recipient nations. Part of the challenge in this debate could be the limited understanding of the impacts of immigration to developed countries such as the US. Through the classical Aristotelian model, this essay showcases why immigration is good for the developed world and why policies should be implemented to support the influx of people from different cultural backgrounds into the developed world. Having assessed the key contentious area of immigration, immigration must be validated both on the grounds of moral obligation and its impacts on a nation’s social fabric, economic growth, and global standing. One of the reasons why immigration should not be a factor of debate is its enduring legacy. Most countries in the developed world link their identity to immigration. For instance, America has the notion of the “melting pot”, a phrase that is commonly used about the country’s ability to infuse different cultures into success (Kusmallah & Ghorashi, 2024). America also bases its key attributes on immigration. From the early ages, colonizers from Europe and slaves from Africa brought various benefits to the country including labor, ideas, unique traditions, and languages. All such factors turned the US into the greatest nation in the world. Other countries like France and the UK have also based their success largely on the legacy of immigration (Jacobsen & Piekut, 2023). The legacy of immigration is also marked by its ability to steer progress. The Industrial Revolution is an example of progress that was anchored on immigration. During the Industrial Revolution, skilled immigrants from the rest of the world brought impactful changes in the US that are evident today (Kapelner, 2024). That is because a wave of scientists and engineers fled their countries to converge in the US. The outcomes would be the pivotal roles that the immigrants played in developing American technology such as the creation of the atomic bomb or the inputs at the early stages of the space program. Secondly, immigration has played a crucial role in fueling economic growth. In debates about immigration, the impacts of immigrants on the economic progress of the recipient nations are always cited. Opponents of immigration believe that the new entrants take job opportunities from the locals. However, research is showcasing a different understanding (Jacobsen & Piekut, 2023). Analyses from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine demonstrate that immigration has a net positive effect on the U.S. economy. That is, when immigrants come into countries like the US, France, the UK, and Germany among others, they open avenues for economic growth rather than diminishing those avenues.
