Monopoly Affects My Life
Monopoly has been one of the most exciting and educative games I have played since childhood because of the vast literacy skills I gained from it. It has been a while since I played monopoly although memories are still fresh in mind. For several summers when I was younger, I witnessed my elder brother play with my cousins who stayed at our home. My mom would somehow give us the freedom of fun that occasionally filled up every corner of the house. I used to wonder about the kind of enjoyment and lessons that came with this game, as participants could spend long mornings, endless afternoons, and late nights playing. After observing the play, I too developed an interest in a monopoly which later became my favorite game.
My little experience with it gave me the impression that the game was invented by a vicious, callous, and ruthless lover of pain. Though influential, it was hard to see anybody get through monopoly without crying. One morning, we set up a card table around the house in preparation for the game that typically began with a scuffle. Everyone had their preferred game piece. My favorite piece was the shoe. Before commencing, we reminded ourselves of the rules regulating the gaming process. We communicated these rules to everyone and negotiated them to establish a consensus on how monopoly should be played and the actions allowed or disallowed.
Literacy
At first, I was a little bit nervous, wondering what literacy skills I could gain from the game, but it was not long until I realized that playing Monopoly could strengthen my communication skills. Speaking from my experience, participating in the game indeed enabled me to acquire strong communication skills to negotiate the rules due to my interpersonal connection with my cousins. Initially, I struggled to strike up a conversation but monopoly, which requires interaction and concentration, became an excellent icebreaker and a healthy way to learn how to communicate better with my opponents. As part of the rules, no one was allowed to take another player’s piece. Next, we fought for the position of a banker, gluing our eyes on my cousin, who took too long counting the numbers on the dice. Everyone was ferocious and ruthless. We were a monopoly. Had the game not started with tears, it was still a guarantee that someone had to cry at the end of it due to its traumatic nature. Monopoly has intense stakes, but we were not mature enough to handle the mortgages, free parking jackpots, and jail time with dignity. After many hours of attempts without a clear winner, someone would snap, and money would go flying.
At 3 pm, the dice was firmly clutched in my hand. Sitting beside my younger cousin, I attempted to channel a serenity posture with a winning look. My upfront was to no avail. I knew this exchange was close to an end. A string of bad rolls accompanied by a one-way jail ticket led to the foreclosures of all my property. Within a short time, I was bankrupt. Immediately, I thought it was time to learn how to negotiate. I remembered that playing monopoly gives a participant a nested opportunity to acquire negotiation skills: - a vital attribute in today’s business. I remembered that I could play the game and win if I know how to negotiate well. To get better at this, I learned how to think from my opponent’s perspective and connect the dots. By mastering the art of negotiation, I had a super power to navigate my life from getting paid more to purchasing property and convincing a client to pay more money.
Complication
We played for hours, and by 6 pm, long play pushed me into exhaustion. The fatigue was the main challenge involved in achieving my communication literacy. Despite being entertained for a long time, I did not want to talk to anyone after the game. At some point, I got distracted, bored, and almost gave up before finishing the game. ...
