John Dewey theories had a profound influence on the public education. He strongly promoted the radical reform of the early half of the twentieth century of public education system and instrumentalism. He advocated for an educational system that had continuously vocational training and experimentation to enable students to be in a position to solve practical questions. He lectured all over the world and mainly dealt in psychological insights with regard to the capabilities and interests to the individual child. According to him, education is about growth and that schools played an important role in creating a responsive environment that met an individual child’s needs and interests. This allowed a child to flourish (Dykhuizen & Boydston, 1973).
Some of his theories and methods can be said to include:
Instrumentalism: the relationship between the pragmatic and utilitarian school of thought. He argues that Instruments bears all the necessary forms and modes of human activities, and that these instruments are developed by individual human beings that enable them to solve both social and individual problems (Dykhuizen & Boydston, 1973). According to him, the world keeps on changing and therefore we have to be flexible in that the instruments of dealing with these changes must also change.
