Poetry is often said to be the easiest way to communicate effectively, without necessarily having to be very direct. It is the epitome of a language’s beauty, and its versatility to bring the best within its literature. It is through poetry also, that one is able to express his or her thoughts and emotions in a manner that comes out as artistic or musical, thereby placing a subtle aspect about the message, which eliminates sentimentality. Walt Whitman’s I Hear America Singing is perhaps one of those poems whose content will resonate to the reader, long after reading it. The poem has particular aspects that altogether make it quitter a read.
Walt Whitman has in his works, carved out his niche as a poet who entrenches his content on the ideals of patriotism and democracy. His love for America and everything that makes the country great is quite evident. He is usually fascinated about the American culture, and will praise everything and everyone that contributes towards the noble goal of making the country great. He is a proud citizen, and would love nothing but to praise his nation. I Hear America Singing is his version of praise in form of poetry, for the simple, everyday citizens who constitute the very fabric of the American society.

I Hear America Singing is simply a poem illustrating a happy group of individuals who are working while singing. They are enjoying what they are doing. The speaker of the poem seems to be more of an observer or a native too, who takes note of all the individuals who make up much of America’s workforce by then; the mechanics, seamstresses, and even carpenters. Even more specifically, the speaker notes that every worker is singing a tune that belongs to him or her, based on the occupation. They are singing out aloud in the course of their work, and as can be noted from the speaker, they also like doing the same when it comes to their parties as well.
In the poem, the first stanza the poet has already established his position as the observer and the listener. I hear it is repeated several times thus asserting the significance of the role that the speaker has in the poem. The first line of the poem also introduces a metaphor that is controlling the poem that is the phrase “I hear America singing.” The gives the historical context of the time that it was composed. That shows what led the speaker to the composing of the poem. The speaker has given a description of various carols. These carols arise from different people of the working class in the united states of America as they go on with their work. The speaker can hear the mechanics, the boatmen, the carpenter and the mason singing from their places of work. He can also hear the songs of the shoemaker, the deckhand, the woodcutter, and the ploughboy.
The first two lines state ‘hear America singing, the varied carols I hear, Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong, ’clearly indicating the speaker is coming in with such a confident tone. In this case, he is not necessarily using America is singing as physical cities or locations in the country. He is just using it as a figurative phrase to mean the people, the citizens. In lines 3-5, the speaker introduces more singers, such as the carpenter, deckhand as well as the boatman. One similarity about these singers is that they are all laborers. These are tough occupations, not the glamorous ones that people usually aspire for.
The laborers are singing, each to their song, a clear indication of some sense of ownership right there. The aim of this poem here is to bring out the fact that, as much as the occupation might be tough, the workers get their joy, satisfaction and motivation from the singing.
