The Giver is a 1993 American book by Lois Lowry. It was set in the society which looked exactly like utopian but was revealed as dystopian. The book follows a little boy called Jonas. A few years ago, a film adaptation was also released, featuring Meryl Streep, Brenton Thwaites and Jeff Bridges in the leading roles. The novel has formed a connection with three other books of the same period: Son, Messenger, and The Giver Quartet: Gathering Blue. Life is not a bed of roses, and this has been beautifully depicted in this novel (Lowry & Mahy, 2014).
Jonas is the main character of the Giver; he is polite, sensitive and compassionate and possesses a dynamic personality. He changes with time because of his bad experiences and actions. At the December Ceremony, he gets a chance to become the Receiver of Memory, one of the most honored positions in his community. After a few days, he learns the truths about his community: the people have started giving up their freedom and individuality and intend to live like βrobotsβ (Lowry & Mahy, 2014).
