Understanding how identity is shaped in today's society is essential for everyone. This is because the intersection between identity and imperialism plays a pivotal role in shaping power relations, social categorizations, gender norms, and even our self-perception. In line with this, this article focuses on Joshua Chambers-Letson's exploration of "Identity" and his argument that an individual's identity is not shaped merely by his ideas and perception but through consistent interactions within social spheres, particularly among family and friends. As could be gleaned from his work, the author has critically addressed how identity (and identity politics), once believed to be a product of one's environment, has become a strategic tool marginalized populations use in response to oppressive structures.
