Two of the discussed theory that affects relationships include the gatekeeping theory and the media dependency theory. The former views relationships based on practicality, while the latter stresses the significance of availability (DeIuliis, 2015).
DeIuliis (2015) explained the central concept of the gatekeeping theory, which states that gatekeepers secure the gate by which the information passes through. The gatekeepers control what must and must not be conveyed to the other end of the communication. Therefore, they contain the power to uphold justice or biases, thereby influencing the mindset of many. It views relationships as practical and holds the most influential individual accountable in spreading a piece of information. The actions of this person bring widespread social changes.
