Various factors have brought about these changes. Some of the major ones include changing climatic conditions, rapidly growing populations, and the need for better quality foods, among others. I will base my arguments on urban farming. This text explores mostly ways in which the world can be fed in the years to come.
Generally describing, urban farming refers to the cultivation of crops and rearing livestock in a city or within its environs. In most cases, it is usually for commercial purposes. It involves crop cultivation on rooftops, indoor farming, and vertical farming, among others. Arguably this method of agriculture has quite some weighty advantages. Benke & Tomkins (2017) found that urban farming facilities have the potential advantage of being a source of a clean and green source of fresh food. This is a major advantage as it might ensure food security and offer a reliable source of healthy food. The local community mostly practices urban farming, therefore this food should be readily available and affordable to local markets.
Another major advantage is environmental friendliness. Urban agriculture encourages improved and optimized farming techniques that are less harmful to the environment, for example, controlled use of farm inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides.
