Introduction
Adolescents are already more distracted as their prefrontal cortex continues to develop. The prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain that controls the higher functioning of a person like self-regulation, planning, and attention control. During this age of Instagram, Tik Tok and Snapchat, where identities are formed through the use of these platforms, understanding the developmental impact of social media is important. Online platforms can be effective for learning and emotional support. However, when experiences are too extreme or passive, they impair the ontogenetic developments of the abilities to control attention, regulate emotions, and think about others (Bottaro & Faraci, 2022). The social media impact on the growth and development of adolescents cannot be termed positive or negative. Instead, how it is applied, the adolescent’s emotional state, and the wider context of their cognitive development should be deployed to gauge the impacts.
Research Aim and Questions
The aim of this study is to assess the conditional influence of social media use on adolescent development, focusing on cognitive, emotional, and social well-being. To address the above aim, the study will foster the following questions:
How does the design of social media platforms impede the natural development of attention span and cognitive control in adolescents?
In what ways does heavy social media use influence the neurological processing of social and emotional information?
What are the differential impacts of active engagement versus passive engagement on an adolescent's self-esteem, development of empathy, and vulnerability to social comparison?
Literature Review
Impact on Attention and Cognitive Control
Adolescents are already more prone to distraction as their prefrontal cortex undergoes further development. The prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain that controls the executive functioning of a person like self-regulation, planning, and attention control. Social content that is dopamine-stimulated and uses infinite scroll directly impedes children’s natural attention span development. The design of these platforms is not meant for focused attention. Normally, their aim is to promote impulsivity, steer quick and frequent task-shifting, and encourage multitasking. An experience of any of the above outcomes or their different combinations can impair cognition and other developmental abilities on the targeted teenagers.
Studies show that teens who spend too much time on social media are likely to be inattentive and cannot manage their behavior properly. McNamee et al. (2021) argued that people who exceed several hours of daily use face a greater risk of suffering from overindulgence. It is not just the total screen time that is the problem, but the way attention is distributed due to fast combination and separation of social media items. When the brain has to keep changing its focus with new things, it creates a low-threshold attention mechanism that always stays alert. Thus, it is increasingly hard to have a more intense focus. That is, by constantly shifting focus to accommodate a cascade of novel stimuli, the brain may develop a persistent, low-threshold mechanism for attention. Consequently, it creates a deep, sustained focus on non-immediate rewards like academic study increasingly difficult.
Neurological and Emotional Processing Effects
A scarier possibility is that this exposure may result in alterations in brain functioning in a critical developmental window. A longitudinal study found that heavy and repetitive use of social media, in particular, was related to changes in the brain lower regions associated with experiencing social contact and emotional responses. (Achterberg et al., 2021). As causality would require more data and research, these findings suggest that social media does not just cause certain behaviors. Instead, it might also affect the brain’s fundamental ability to process social and emotional information.
Regarding emotional health, social media influences teenagers’ emotions in more ways than one as much as it helps. As a young person is not yet capable of cognitive processing, cognitive definition and cognitive computation of emotional phenomena, social media can become an easy opportunity for emotional evasion or for emotional affirmation. Teens who are bored, stressed, or socially anxious, find instant gratification from TikTok, Instagram and other apps an attractive distraction. However, often this defence mechanism fails (Iannattone et al., 2024). Young people who use social media for help with their low mood or to calm their nerves become more dependent (addictive) upon it and become more emotionally unstable. This can make them prone to neurotic disturbances and depression over time.
The above insights do not mean that all social media use is harmful to emotional well-being. It is whether teenagers are using it as an add-on to real-life emotional support or a substitute for real-life support that creates the difference. According to Scott and colleagues (2023), digital ...
