Students will write a 5-page paper sharing their experience with the research project. It is recommended that students utilize the first 1-2 pages describing the research project they worked on – what is the problem, how was the problem studied (i.e., methodology), and what were the results (if the study concluded during the semester). The rest of the paper should focus on the students’ personal experiences. Project Overview and Research Context
My professor mentor and I have been working on a project this semester to create and ready materials for a new adult education course. The project targets adult literacy issues in the United States. Most adults possess low-level reading and writing skills. People who have few skills are hardly needed for work and community life, in other words, they are redundant. In light of the above, older adults who had trouble in the past at school may find it hard to grasp advanced learning tasks. Thus, there should be a simple curriculum generated specifically for such gaps.
I reviewed the teaching plan, organized instructional resources, and assisted in preparing the course for implementation. This piece the work was modeled on Adult Learning Theory (Andragogy) and empowerment-oriented work. Adult literacy efforts were historically linked to civic participation and empowerment, such as with the Freedmen’s Schools. Also contributing to the development of data collection forms in order to collect evidence of learner progress and materials improvement gave me the experience of being involved in an activity that helped reduce the gap between theory and practice. It is evident how literacy can help individuals get ahead in life and how it promotes equity.
Core Problem Addressed
This project works to tackle adult literacy problem in the US. Many adults cannot read and write well enough to get a job. Some of them cannot communicate effectively each day or participate in their community (Gal, 2024). Notably, most adult learners come to class with diverse life experiences. Many are not new to school but rather might have had limited access early on bearing a range of challenges. Additionally, some may have dropped out and returned, while there are also immigrants whose objective would be to learn languages and increase proficiency in English at school (Storey & Wagner, 2024). So, this group must have effective writing instruction that balances skills training and confidence builder training, cultural relevance and practical application with it. Easy-to-use, approachable, and empowering solutions were our design philosophy to tackle this daunting teaching challenge.
Theoretical Framework and Methodology
Theoretical Frameworks
The adult writing course curriculum was developed in line with a particular best practice-based theory of adult education. The materials were made to be instructionally sound and relevant and empowering for the target population by using this framework. The course design was guided by three key theoretical principles. First on the list of the frameworks was the Adult Learning Theory (Andragogy). The curriculum design fully acknowledged the theories of andragogy. As per the theory, adult learners are self-directed and have a wealth of life experiences that must be used as an advantage in the classroom and not a deterrent (Borradaile, Martinez, & Schochet, 2021). The material was organised to take account of this and to link new skills directly to learners' prior knowledge and practical objectives.
The project also assisted educators in empowering students delivering learner-centered and culturally responsive instruction. Literacy was framed not just as a skill for school, but as an important stepping stone to greater social and civic engagement.
