Theme of the poem
This poem talks about prejudice. The mother slaps the kid for being curious. The kid wants to touch the skin of the black person in a bus out of curiosity but the mother cannot let him do so because she has told the kid that it is wrong to interact with black people. (Lines 7 and 8)

Essay: Are we raising morally illiterate kids
Morality has been for a long time been in question especially when different generations are involved in a particular situation that has a moral dimension. Of the common issues in generations include the morality among grand-parents, parents and their children’s generation. One question that however keeps recurring is Are we any more or less moral than our parents or grandparents were? Caroline Medwell is a writer who was deeply concerned with morality in children and the differences between them and their parents. Even more disparity is seen when we extrapolate the comparison to the grand-parents.
When we look at the first case where we have the two boys Derek and Adam, we see that Derek has an “I first” attitude. He cheats in a competition and even goes ahead to defend his victory. Unlike Derek, Adam who is also weak just follows the instructions and is just happy when the teacher notes something fishy with Derek and gives them a tie. Children as we know from psychology learn behavior. Much of what children learn is through imitation and reinforcement of a behavior.
