Case Assignment

Write a well-organized and well-supported essay with an original thesis based on the assigned videos for Module 3. The essay must include no less than SIX citations from these videos.

A well-organized essay has a beginning, middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction, should include an opening sentence to grab your reader’s attention. Follow the opening sentence with a brief background on the topic or situation. In this case, it would be an explanation of the “me” society we live in today. The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis statement. The thesis states the main point of the essay.

A well-supported essay includes supporting points, details, and examples. For this essay, you must decide the best way to organize the body of the paper. Each body paragraph must have a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph.

This essay must include no less than SIX citations from these videos.Citations are to be a combination of direct quotations and paraphrased quotations with or without the author's name. No others sources are to be used for this assignment.

The conclusion typically summarizes the main points of the essay and/or closes with a lasting impression that connects the reader to their world. In this case, where do we go from here?

The essay must also include a Reference List that includes the videos quoted in the essay.

Be sure to proofread your essay and edit for proper grammar, punctuation, diction (word choice), and spelling, as errors in sentence skills will lower a final grade. A grade will be determined based on the Module 3 Case expectations and the Trident University General Education rubric for English.

Papers must be double-spaced in Times or Times New Roman font (12 cpi) with standard one-inch margins.

The first person "I" is not used in a formal essay, nor is the passive "you." In place of "you," "one" may be used.

The “me culture” has been most prevalent among today’s generation as marked by increasing skepticism towards religion and less community involvement. Though, there are calls for society improvement, people seem to ignore the fact that we are interdependent. Thus, people have increasingly become selfish and they focus less towards achieving healthy and safe communities. In the video if we could see inside other people’s hearts (n.d), patients, medical personnel and visitors to a hospital all have their personal problems. This shows that being more concerned about other people would help to solve some societal problems in contrast to the “me culture.” This, essay focuses on the “me culture” as being a prevailing trend that represents culture of individualism and changes in the American society.
It is possible that the growing “me culture” mirrors a situation where today’s generation is brought up through structured systems then suddenly thrust to the world in their adulthood with little information. The youth are brought up in a system that focused so much on structured life, and supervision, but upon graduating from college they are bombarded with messages of living their dreams. However, this is far from the reality as employees must adhere to the work structure for them to succeed. Even though, the youth constantly hear the message that self is at the center of everything in, life tasks actually hold a more prominent role in life (Brooks, 2011). Brooks asserts that focusing on the notion of self as one of the most important aspects of life is misleading, as even the most successful people seek to find solutions by looking on the outside and not on the inside. Thus, the “me culture” is counterproductive because it ignores the realities of life where people fail to see opportunities by looking inwards.
The “me culture” is now more common in the society more than ever before, similar increased religious indifference among the youth. According to NPR (2013) more young people are increasingly questioning role of religion in their lives, and this has been one of the reason for falling religious observance among the youth. In the article, the young interviewees show that there is disconnect between the religious teachings and their lives, because some of the 21st challenges are not adequately covered by religion. All the young interviewees grew up in religious homes, but then became indifferent towards religious matter as they became more independent. Brooks (2012) alludes to this disconnect between what the current generation experience and what their parents tell them by focusing on the increasing economic challenges that make it harder for the youth to be economically independent.
One of the indicators of the “me culture” is that more Americans increasingly prefer to benefit from system that make a worthwhile contribution to the society. Mackey (2012) focuses on economic dependence as being the reason for this changing trend in the American society. Mackey differs with the notion that disconnect between generations has contributed to the “me culture” by showing that it is through choice that people have become less economically independent. Even though, there are honest people who work hard and save up for their retirement, there is an emerging trend of a society dependent on freebies, handouts and bailouts (Mackey, 2012...
